Common Boiler Repair Issues and How to Fix Them

3 mins | Blog | Feb 6, 2025

A well-functioning boiler is essential for maintaining a warm and comfortable home, especially during the colder months. However, like any mechanical system, boilers can develop issues over time. Identifying and addressing these problems early can prevent costly repairs and ensure efficient operation. In this blog, we’ll discuss some of the most common boiler repair issues and how you can fix them.

1. No Heat or Hot Water

One of the most frustrating issues is when your boiler stops producing heat or hot water. This problem can be caused by several factors, including:

  • Thermostat issues – Check if the thermostat is set correctly and functioning properly.
  • Low pressure – If your boiler pressure is too low, it won’t work correctly. Check the pressure gauge and refill if necessary.
  • Pilot light gone out – Older boilers rely on a pilot light, which can go out due to draughts or faults.
  • Broken diaphragm or airlock – These parts control water flow and may need replacement.

Fix: Start by checking the thermostat settings and adjusting them if needed. If the pressure is low, you can refill the system using the filling loop. If the problem persists, contact a professional for further diagnosis.

2. Leaking and Dripping

A leaking boiler can cause serious damage if left untreated. Common causes include:

  • Broken internal components – Faulty seals, pump issues, or a corroded heat exchanger can lead to leaks.
  • High boiler pressure – Excessive pressure can force water out through the relief valve.
  • Corrosion – Over time, corrosion can damage the pipes and cause leaks.

Fix: Identify the source of the leak and tighten any loose fittings. If internal components are damaged, it’s best to call a qualified engineer.

3. Strange Noises

Boilers often make noises, but if you hear banging, whistling, or gurgling sounds, it could indicate a problem. Possible causes include:

  • Air in the system – This can create gurgling noises.
  • Kettling – A build-up of limescale in the heat exchanger can cause loud banging sounds.
  • Pump failure – A faulty pump may produce a humming noise.

Fix: Bleeding your radiators can help remove air from the system. If you suspect kettling, flushing the system may be necessary to remove scale build-up. If the noise persists, call a technician for assistance.

4. Boiler Keeps Turning Off

If your boiler frequently turns off, it may be due to:

  • Low water pressure – A leak or faulty pressure valve can cause low pressure.
  • Thermostat problems – A malfunctioning thermostat can cause erratic operation.
  • Blocked condensate pipe – In winter, the condensate pipe may freeze, leading to shutdowns.

Fix: Check and refill the pressure if needed. Reset the thermostat and ensure it’s in good working condition. If the condensate pipe is frozen, gently thaw it with warm water.

5. Radiators Not Heating Up

If your radiators remain cold even when the boiler is running, you might have:

  • Trapped air – Air pockets can prevent hot water circulation.
  • Sludge build-up – Over time, sludge and rust can block the pipes.
  • Faulty pump – A malfunctioning pump may not push hot water efficiently.

Fix: Bleeding the radiators can release trapped air. If sludge is the problem, power flushing the system can help. For pump issues, professional repair or replacement may be needed.
